Aliense (Antonio Vassilacchi, 1556-1629), The Resurrection

Church of Santo Stefano, Venice

Aliense expresses the triumph of the Resurrection with Christ's exuberant gesture, the windswept fabric, and an explosion of sunlight in the background. In contrast, the soldiers rise groggily from various degrees of somnolence. The lid of the sepulcher appears to be firmly in place and locked down, suggesting that Christ has passed through it rather than breaking it aside.

Interestingly, no cross is visible on the banner or at the top of the standard.
